I called up a friend of mine, Steve, a mechanic, and boy was he angry!  His sister-in-law just got scammed with a car she bought.  She had a baby and now they needed a car with a working A/C  ASAP. 

She was an easy sell, the salesman showed her the typical 4 door sedan with ice cold A/C and she bought it and scheduled it for a pick up.  It needed a new set of tires on the front, so she paid the salesman the extra amount to put some new tires on.  

When she picked up the car, she didn’t even get home before her A/C STOPPED working!  She was enraged and drove straight to Steve. 

He took a look at the car, and told her not only was the A/C not working, but she had a power steering fluid leak and those new tires she paid for...  Arent’ new! They put the front tires on the back and vice versa!

Steve's sister-in-law wasn't the only one who got scammed.  People are getting scammed with their used cars every day.  

I know how it feels to get scammed I’ve been there one too many times myself.  Before I met Steve I bought a jet black Acura Integra, tinted windows, specialized rims, I was in love.  

I was also that poor schmuck excited to have a nice set of wheels until a month later when I realized that it was a money-sucking, headache inducing, nightmare with a steering wheel!

How do you know you need a Top Engine Rebuild?

Hopefully not the way I did! 

I wish I knew the answer to that before I bought that Acura, a month didn’t pass by before I realized my acura was drinking more than a drunken sailor.  I took it in for a diagnoses: A top engine rebuild!  

By the time the summer hit that ice cold A/C was no longer cold.  I guess I should have known that used car dealers love to recharge the A/C system with a new can of Freon.  After all it’s the first thing we check, and if the leak isn’t too serious you won’t know until you take it off the lot, whether that be tomorrow or the month or two after.

Unfortunately Steve couldn’t help us much, used car dealers were his number one customer and it would be bad for business to expose them. 

But it doesn’t stop there, I was I was adamant about getting some insider experts to SHOW us what to be looking for, when inspecting that car. 

Travelling from mechanic shops to used car lots, to dealer only car auctions.  I was on a quest to find insider experts to inform us consumers about what to watch out for, and to actually show us on video tape.  But it wasn’t easy, most didn’t want to be on videotape, others had vested interests.   But no destination was to far, and no amount of time was too much. 

I was a man on a mission, I am sick and tired of these two bit theives and their accomplices taking consumers for every dollar they have. 

An Unsuspecting Afternoon...

It was an unsuspecting afternoon, when I was giving someone a ride.  We started talking and I told him what I was trying to do and my dilema and frustrations of getting this footage to help you the consumer, and at that moment I realized that someone I was talking to was no other than Leonard the Lion!

Here's what I found... 

When looking at what’s out there to help someone like me and you, we find an array of used car buying guides but nothing that addresses the issue.  

At best you will be told that you should check this and that, but for someone like me or you who is not a mechanic we need to be SHOWN what to look for and what to listen for not TOLD what to do!

Seeing is believing, and words don’t cut it.  It’s like trying to explain the taste of honey versus sugar to someone who hasn’t tasted them.

Professor Jim Miles was another expert I was able to meet in my quest to stop consumers from being scammed.  The car history report is great but collisions are not always reported on the car history report, and you can’t count on dealers disclosing them for you.  

Professor of Autobody at Mohawk College in Hamilton, Ontario, Jim shows us what is commonly called “spotting”.  What we need to be looking for to spot if a vehicle has been in a wreck and subsequently repaired.
